Well we render things ourselves using LICE, typically, but then just use the GDI's BitBlt() to get it to screen. On Win32 at least it's about as compatible and fast as anything else, afaik...

I think practicing by making stuff, and picking moderately challenging things to do both help you learn and be more capable. Also, occasionally working on other people's code, and learning to work within their systems in styles is quite helpful. It's all about being able to adapt.

I agree, largely. C++, as used by many, is indeed a horrible language. Programmers who would whine about a project being C instead of C++ are programmers who I wouldn't want to work with. git. Up until a week ago I would have said SVN, but I've converted. The tools for SVN are more mature on Windows, and SVN is a lot simpler to understand, but the sheer power and speed of git is fantastic. So much so that I haven't really gotten any work done lately, I've instead been playing with various branch/merge/rebase scenarios, going "wow" a lot...

Not directly, licecap goes to gif or lcf.. if you record to LCF, you can render to MP4 with REAPER+FFmpeg, but licecap won't record audio in that instance anyway.

Not explicitly.. I definitely know when something is designed in a way that I don't like, and then I try to avoid doing that. It's all a very intuitive process for me, and while there is trial and error involved, it does not dominate.

A lot of it overlaps with linux -- OS X is very much BSD-derived, so you have a lot of common things that FreeBSD and Linux have, such as pthreads, standard file APIs, etc.

Where it primarily differs is that the recommended way to build GUI stuff is now Cocoa, which is Objective C, so that takes some getting used to. Objective C isn't bad, but it is quite different in syntax from using Win32 or GTK+ for example. There is also a deprecated Carbon API, but one probably shouldn't bother with it at this point.

One issue with OS X that I've found is that there are generally about 5 different ways to do the same thing, and often it's hard to figure out which one is best (or even to find most of them). Recent examples include CGBitmapContextCreateImage() -- the obvious way to do something, that is soooo unoptimal. Or if you try to draw text to a RGB buffer, there's lots of choice in how to go about it (and no clear winner).

Not really. We pretty much only use new for single objects (and use malloc/free/WDL_HeapBuf-based storage for everything else).

We do verify that our allocations succeed, when it is likely that they are for enough RAM where the heap could conceivably not have a block big enough. I love x86_64, btw. mmm.

Hmm, well for the resizing of children you might want to look at WDL's wingui/wndsize.h... Then, if you want to make it user resizeable, you could paint your own control in the right place, and if a WM_LBUTTONDOWN happens there, SetCapture(), handle WM_MOUSEMOVE, etc.

We all do pretty much everything, though Christophe does most video related things. There is no division based on complexity of feature, though we do informally pick our tasks based on relative expertise and code familiarity. Having said that, most features end up having had multiple people worked on them, as we all try to use REAPER and make sure that changes/addition fit in with our visions of the program...

Just a bunch of crap. It was pretty awesome for a while, finding yourself in situations where you need to buy things and being able to, but generally speaking the idea of things is much better than actually having them. Unless they are things you use every day (for example, a faster computer when you spend tons of time every day in front of your computer waiting for things to compile = win. A faster car when you don't drive much = lose.)

HWNDs are not a pain, but they do use a lot of resources (there is a systemwide limit on the number of HWNDs that can exist at any given time, etc). Also, the virtual windows allow us to do proper composition and some other fancy things using LICE. You can do some of this using Windows 2000+ APIs with HWNDs, but meh.

In a very early version of winamp, the changelog mentioned "add EQ, but how?" Where did you eventually find out how?

Initially I just experimented with tweaking the MDCT coefficients in the mp3 decoder. Later on I found some stuff on IIR filters (so that the EQ could work on other formats etc), I have no idea where from, then eventually another person (I think someone from 4front) gave us better filters, too. These days, though, I'd look at the RBJ filter guide...

One reason I like java is the great static analysis tools eg FindBugs. Do you use any of those for c/c++ work eg lint/splint?

Well I could link to the appropriate Wikipedia articles on their basic structure, but instead I'll highlight the practical differences from the top of my head:

The stack is much more limited in size, and is thread-local (meaning it is faster because it generally does not need to synchronize any threads to access). On Windows it's typically reserved at just a couple of megabytes, even.
Memory allocated on the stack is temporary, but because of this, it's highly predictable where the memory will be allocated from (which means it is faster to calculate), and also often more likely to be in cache.
The heap is much larger, persistent, and can have allocations managed across threads. This requires thread safety, and more data structures to search for free space when allocating.

It really depends on the task... some things do lend themselves well to being split up on cores. It does require different design and mindset when programming them, though. In REAPER's case, it's essentially: "all of these things will need to be done a bit ahead of time by a pool of workers, and the main audio thread will pick the results up when needed".

There's also logic for processing blocks of audio for different in parallel on multiple cores, but this doesn't work well at lower latencies (since synchronizing the threads output takes a bit of time).

I probably wouldn't have developed Winamp in that case. Actually I take that back -- those three features aren't enough. What made Winamp something that you would want to use is that it was built to be used a lot, by people who used it a lot. Winplay3's design was very much "hey look we can play MP3, it works!" :/

We do some of these things, but not others. For us, targeting MSVC6/2005/GCC 4.x (OSX and Linux), it's less of a big deal, as many things are supported. Not overdoing templates, not using RTTI, not using C++ exceptions, and not using iostream or STL are the big ones (the latter may or may not have much benefit, but it makes us a lot happier in general). For our platforms, you can use constructors for static objects, it seems, but of course you do need to be careful (as the order in which constructors/destructors are called can vary and be dangerous).

So you utilize VC6 and avoid modern frameworks so your apps run everywhere, but do you think REAPER people really run Win9x?

Various.. probably the most all around was an old Canon EOS D30. I miss that camera, I think it was the first SLR with a CMOS sensor. I later replaced it with an original 1D, which I don't like as much. It has a CCD, and is too heavy, too.

I think just one last year.. quite a few travel-to-see-family trips, though, but they don't really count as vacation. I'm bad about it, though -- even when we take a vacation I end up working most of it.

Not really. I used to use the nalgene ones in highschool (they also made great containers for fluid-suspension egg drop devices), but these days with all the talk about BPA or whatever, I dunno. I'm a big fan of my home reverse osmosis filter, though. I like camelback type things (the newer ones especially), too... for bike riding and skiing.

Usually I think people usually make entirely new controls (usually not as separate HWNDs). Generally using a HWND for everything is bad -- HWNDs are global user objects, and you can run out of them. That and they aren't properly composited, usually..

If AOL (whomever) agreed WASTE was open source and that they were wrong, would you consider a revisit, or is it a bore?

Not at this point. If at some point I was wanting to do something else -- a point which may come someday but who knows when -- then I would consider it. Why not? Because money is money, and once you have more that a certain amount it loses its ability to improve your quality of life.

That's a great question. I was going to list off a list of things that I had spent days banging my head on the wall over (such as "gcc by default doesn't align doubles in structs very well"), but I can't think of many others. I know there were some, primarily relating to OS X porting.

I guess the biggest helpful thing would have been to support multi-project sooner rather than later. A ton of stuff had to be broken/fixed in order to support having multiple projects open at the same time, and had it been planned-in, it would have been a lot easier (at minimal cost). We still need to do multiple projects visible at the same time, too...

Actually MMX optimizations were probably the most annoying -- porting stuff that used the FPU in all of its glorious precision to use limited range integer SIMD registers, while still maintaining ISO compatibility. Oh, if only SSE2 had been there.

I'd check to make sure the other members have public IPs and/or ports open. If the latter, and they are behind NAT, you can configure WASTE with their public IPs so that other hosts know what IP to contact them on. If I remember correctly...

It would be pretty easy to write a wrapper.. but winamp dsp plug-ins can only be created one instance at a time, so, it'd be somewhat limited (unless you copied the DLL and loaded a diff filename each time).

LICE_TransformBlit() may do what you want. you give it an output rectangle, a source image, and a list of source image points that get mapped to points on the output rectangle.. you can do all kinds of fun stuff with that.

Umm I dunno... most programmers don't get to be that well known. I do appreciate when I go to integrate a particular bit of code, and it's reasonably designed. Wavpack is much more enjoyable to integrate than FLAC, for example. That's a tangent.. anyway I do read virtualdub.org now and then, it's helpful/interesting.

You can render stems on the track, then offline the plug-ins, yes... but there's no fancy "freeze" button.

Yeah, not sure what the cleanest way to do this without using a dialog.. in your message loop you could see if the tab key is hit, see what window has focus, get the next/previous child that has WS_TABSTOP set, move the focus there, etc... That'd probably where I would start.
