been seeing a lot of people in socials and forums complain about reaper "not sounding as good as other daws" or "sounds bad when I play it outside" and it comes to the user not even thinking about resample modes, why not make it default to be at the highest quality (r8) on everything? seems like an obscure thing to understand when first starting and it's not that obvious to even know how it may change your desired experience, like juts another "hurdle" to understand reapers "heavy learning curve" etc etc

changing the default resample mode is not going to affect that. IMO pan laws and other things come in to play more. r8brain may be highest quality but for most things it's unnecessary and it's not without some downsides especially in varispeed modes etc.

Hmm will look into this, would you imagine it be via the mediaitem API (so you'd want all of the item timing transformations in place?) or just a PCM_source (so you could make a copy of the source and pull video frames directly from it)?

Hell if I know, sorry I've been incredibly lucky to always get to work on things I enjoyed, so my advice would be a ridiculous "find something you enjoy and make it work" but I realize that is probably unrealistic. It would seem to be a big waste to try to throw away your C++ experience. Maybe try to find ways to expand it, and rather than being a webdev or C++ dev, but a "full stack" sort of dev? Lots of C++ experience plus ability to integrate other stuff might be a good path?

How come that some of the EEL-functions are not available in Lua/Python? For instance gmem in Python or network-functions in Lua.

REAPER developer Justin Frankel, recently used AI to do all tedious work of studying the Ffmpeg API, AI gave code suggestions but some were wrong and he tweaked it. So per your logic, that code is public domain and Justin don't own that aspect of REAPER. Funny!
I don't think that's a correct assertion; if I asked it to modify some existing code that I owned the copyright for, that would not make the resulting modified version entirely public domain; the changes made would be, but the underlying code would still be subject to copyright protection. Additionally, if I modified its changes, then my modifications would also be copyrighted.

Perhaps a better way to look at it would be this: if you asked a LLM to write some new code according to a spec, then the resulting code (assuming it didn't directly copy some existing code which was copyrighted, which is hard to know) would be public domain. If a human then modifies that public domain code, then those modifications are subject to copyright, but the code prior to human edits is still public domain. So if someone were to copy the per-human-edit code, they could freely use it as it is public domain. Of course this doesn't address the fact that the LLM almost certainly ripped off some copyrighted (which could be copylefted for that matter) code.

Edit: Reading the original post -- re MAGDA -- the combined program linked with JUCE is GPL. The code made by Claude, in isolation, are arguably public domain (caveat LLMs rip off code etc). So you could in theory take those Claude contributions, and rewrite everything else, and make it not GPL. I imagine that would be so much work that it wouldn't be worth anybody's time, though.

Since this article, I used it to look up a few things related to screensavers, it was somewhat helpful but definitely gave me a lot of bad suggestions too. Unrelated to REAPER, having it generate some oauth2 code for another project was pretty helpful, but as I've probably mentioned before this speaks to the crappiness of documentation/SDKs more than the genius of LLMs.

afaik pulseaudio is pretty high latency. pipewire is the modern thing and it can run pulseaudio emulation too afaik. REAPER can use pipewire-jack, which is a very minimal layer since their underlying APIs (pipewire, jack) are so similar.

With the new marker/region API, what is the path from adding a marker to getting the ProjectMarker object? For example, if I do something like ```lua number = r.AddProjectMarker(0, isrgn, pos, rgnend, name, -1) ``` then number is the displayed number, which can be duplicated. GetRegionOrMarker requires the internal index, and I'm not seeing how I'm supposed to get that without parsing all the markers/regions and finding the best match.

This is very minor thing so pls allow me to post it here. In JSFX, log(), abs(), exp() are all supported and have bright yellow color. I was using pow() in my code and for a moment i thought it wasnt supported cause its syntax color is dim like a function compared to the other math functions mentioned above, so i thought i had to define it, only to realise its actually supported. Check the syntax color for pow() vs the others. Thanks

If I export these presets via export preset library (.rpl) are the samples used in the reasampleomatic / reaverb instances stored within the .rpl file? I am trying to find a good way to build up a library of presets in case of migration between computers or back-up. How do you back-up stuff like this using reaper (re-install OS etc.)?

When I select H.264 as the video encoder, the corresponding parameter populated is h264. However, when I select H.265 as the video encoder, the parameter in the field remains h264, and the same issue occurs with all other video encoders. For the audio section, when I select the AAC encoder, the parameter populated is mp3 instead.

how come this is working alright without error, when slider1 has modes 0,1,2 and only mode 0 and 2 are mentioned in the logic. I thought it was compulsory to specify the slider1 mode 1 too even though mode 1 doesn't work with the pan variable, I thought JSFX ternary syntax will require it? Is this safe? slider1 == 0 ? ( pan = slider9 / 100; ) : slider1 == 2 ? ( pan = slider12 / 100; );

I've spent a frankly embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out how the volume faders are scaled in the Cockos plugins (as well as the "Max precision at +0 dB (4.0)" volume fader shape preference in Reaper). the default is modeled after a PGF8000 taper, I think, I can't find the reference, but it dates from here https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=78197 (I think it's more or less val^3+val^6 then converted to dB, and partitioned according to where the center pos is.)

I've noticed an uptick in people posting tools which are created in assistance with AI. Most seem useful and many are actually great, they develop fast thanks to this community since it's ingrained in the platform you developed; Because of your opennes within REAPER people are making a monster out of it with these tools which also adopt your ideas in a way when 99% of them have been free. When developing an audio player for FLAC (16/24-bit) and Opus using FFmpeg, how would you provide data to audio systems (e.g., DirectSound)? I understand that a system converts all data to 32-bit float before downsampling to 16/24-bit for DAC output, so native formats work. But when playing a 24-bit file on a 16-bit DAC, wouldnt providing 16-bit dithered data help prevent quantization errors during the systems subsequent conversion from 32-bit float back to 16-bit (which is probably not dithered)?

If the source material is 16-bit, then it being converted to 32-bit FP and back to 16-bit would be lossless, assuming no processing is applied. If you apply a volume change etc, then yeah you'd in theory need to dither.

On Windows, if you're worried about it, you'll want to use WASAPI in exclusive mode (or ASIO), otherwise it'll go through the Windows mix engine which will probably ruin everything anyway.

IMO, though, dithering to 16-bit for listening isn't really necessary, unless you have an incredibly quiet room or plan on destroying your ears on the loud parts.

Could you tell me some ways to maximize CPU utilization for file rendering in REAPER? Ideally, I want to hit 90% CPU usage, or even max it out completely. The current rendering speed is way too slow. I understand that the default configuration is balanced for stability and other specific considerations, but I want to push my CPU to its full potential.

it is parallelized across cores, but each track runs on at most one core at once. so if you have one very intensive track, it will be the limiting factor. if you can break that track into multiple tracks (with routing), that might help.
