Question: Do you really think vim is as great as people make it out to be? Aren't modern windows IDEs just as good?

    It depends on what you want to do. There's a lot in there, but you can say the same about emacs, I suppose. Suppose you want to convert a file from CRLF to LF, or vice versa? How would you do it in a modern IDE? Not having to move your hands off of the keyboard to the arrow keys etc is a huge win for vi, too, IMO. The concept of "as good" is flawed. It's about what works for you.
