Question: Based on the merits of the technology itself (not marketing,etc) who is better and why: PC or Mac?

    That's hard to say. OSX has been doing a lot of things right in 10.5/10.6+: specifically, being able to run a 32 bit kernel, with 32 bit drivers, but still have x86_64 apps. That is awesome. Though win64 is working well, too. Most firewire audio devices seem to do better in OSX, for whatever reason, but simple things like updating the screen quickly are better in Windows. Both have their advantages...
