It's probably something stupid, like handling of vertical zooming. The stuff that you would think is more complex has actually gotten quite elegant, whereas the really trivial things that should be easy are old nasty code that needs to be replaced. Comment...

In theory REAPER treats them as UTF-8, but where we get the strings from the purchasing system, not sure how they end up... Comment...
