Question: Does VC6 create machine code as optimized as VS2008, for example? Hasn't compiler technology improved?

    No, it doesn't. Probably the biggest gains to be had by using more recent compilers are that they can output SSE(x) code etc. But we use ICC with VC6 for performance sensitive stuff, and it seems to be a very modern compiler.
