Did you guys use DirectSound to create the spectrum analyzer in Winamp? If not, did you capture samples from the soundcard?

Winamp would have access to the samples.. Originally the spectrum analyzer (and EQ for that matter) actually grabbed information from the frequency domain of the mp3 decoding, so it didn't require doing any sort of FFT etc.
For audio CDs, we'd play them and then sample the audio device for visualization, I think (using waveInOpen() etc)..
