Is it true you lied to someone to get them to sign away any claim to Winamp? news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4154496

I have no idea who that person would be, even.

Question:
Re: convenience. Shouldn't DAWs strive to that? Reaper is not completely there yet in a number of areas...
Asked by midiot (88.207.77.x) on June 22 2012, 8:33am
Reply on June 25 2012, 1:21am:
Well, there are different use cases and we must prioritize things, but I suppose making actions to quantize all MIDI in a project could be useful.

I'd like to invite you as a panelist for this workshop: bollow.ch/papers/SustainableDigitalCulture.pdf - you interested?

Maybe, unsure, but also depends on when/where..

Question:
Is this true in your experience? blackhole12.blogspot.com/2009/12/memory-management-on-modern-cpu...
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on June 21 2012, 10:18pm
Reply on June 21 2012, 11:35pm:
There's a lot in that post, much of it is vague. Is malloc()/new/etc slow? Yes. Should you avoid memory allocation functions in inner loops? Yes. Do we, the seasoned programmers, do this naturally? Most of the time. When we don't, it usually sticks out like a sore thumb. For me, at least, most of the base classes in WDL are designed to use and reuse memory for the scope of their existence. Often they are member variables of some class (such as a track) which persists, etc. There are no custom allocation systems to build, just sensible use and reuse of existing buffers.

Question:
Do you have a home studio? If so, what's in it?
Asked by ees. (69.15.110.x) on June 21 2012, 1:30am
Reply on June 21 2012, 11:36pm:
We have a studio at the office. Old MBP, various audio interfaces, Chinese made ddrum kit, Bass Pod, Pod 2.0, a ZT Lunchbox, various monitors (ranging from cheapo Behringers to Meyer HD-1s), some guitars, a bass, a harmonica, etc. Oh and some mics.

Question:
Re: 90% q/17% swing - people are complaining because there is no GLOBAL input quantize in Reaper. Also no quantize from arrange.
Asked by midiot (88.207.77.x) on June 20 2012, 6:34pm
Reply on June 21 2012, 11:37pm:
Yeah, so it's a "this isn't as convenient as I'd like it to be" sort of thing.

Question:
What's the last 3 things you taught yourself to become a better programmer?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on June 20 2012, 5:05pm
Reply on June 21 2012, 11:38pm:
1) test your work, even if you think it's trivial. 2) test it some more before you push. 3) be prepared for it to not work right even if you think it did; you'll usually find this out within 24-48 hours after the release.

Question:
Can REAPER record the sound of one hand clapping ?
Asked by nofishonfriday (88.130.170.x) on June 20 2012, 12:40pm

Sure! Maybe we should make a synth of that...

Question:
Will reaper every be complete? I don't mean 100% but something close to that. What do you think how long will it take? :)
Asked by John (87.117.204.x) on June 20 2012, 10:38am
Reply on June 20 2012, 12:40pm:
I don't think "complete" really exists for software.

Question:
tinyurl.com/bpken5c Why are you guys constantly ignoring these important MIDI features people point out over and over again?
Asked by midiot (193.198.68.x) on June 20 2012, 8:02am
Reply on June 20 2012, 12:41pm:
See the note at the top of this page, this question should not be asked here. Having said that, that thread isn't terribly helpful, the main thing I saw (quant 90% w/ 17% swing) is trivial to do, not sure why someone is complaining about that...

Question:
Could you name the JSFX_to_VST app HolyGrail?
Asked by Dean (67.174.194.x) on June 19 2012, 6:13am
Reply on June 20 2012, 12:41pm:
Haha that'd be awesome. If we did make that it'd probably be a JSFX to C++ generator, and you'd have to compile that code into VST yourself...

Question:
How does it feel to once preserve CPUs (winamp) and the other to push at the limits (R); where's the most satisfaction? Hello Mr
Asked by gio (94.66.72.x) on June 15 2012, 4:59pm
Reply on June 17 2012, 1:51am:
It's most of the same sort of thing, really, just different constraints. REAPER does a lot more threading and load balancing than Winamp ever did, which is fun stuff.

Question:
As an expert programmer please give your take on the errors (rounding/truncating) in digital summing vs electrical summing.
Asked by Isaac (76.4.180.x) on June 15 2012, 3:30am
Reply on June 17 2012, 1:50am:
64 bit FP is really quite accurate provided you're not accumulating millions of small numbers and expecting them to sum up to something exact... I can't say much for the electrical side, though.

I believe FhG did, as plain text, but I added the #EXTM3U and #EXTINF extensions.
