I do appreciate a good Coke Icee/Slurpee, however I rarely get one...

Otherwise, hmm.. I dunno, I suppose if I did I would be too embarrassed to put it here anyway =)

OKOK I give in, I've started reading gawker.com, to keep up with a friend who seems to always be mentioning things on there (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE).

Question: Why do you use Windows? Do you think it's the best OS? If so, please tell why
Asked by Alex (89.207.47.x) on October 12 2009, 11:37pm
Reply on October 13 2009, 8:28pm:
I don't think you can have a "best" OS.. that'd be like having a "best" guitar..

I like a lot of things about Windows. The Win32 API has a lot to like, especially on x64. Really what it comes down to, though, is that it doesn't get in my way, unlike pretty much any other OS.

Question: Aceofhearts, I recommend grabbing a copy of Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows". After that, perhaps a Jeff Richter book.

Question: I learned basic theory and simple examples of C++. How do I progress to writing practical programs (e.g. Winamp)?
Asked by Aceofhearts (208.53.157.x) on October 6 2009, 1:55am
Reply on October 6 2009, 3:52pm:
There are plenty of ways you can go.. Some might say the easiest are toolkits like Qt, which is probably preferable if you want to build things fast, and don't mind having a biggish runtime etc. The alternative (in my mind) is to program plain-win32, which, as a newbie, may be hellish. Maybe someday I'll finish my vanilla-win32 primer.

Question: What programming language: Do you use most? Did you write Waste with? That you feel is most powerful?
Asked by Aceofhearts (82.94.180.x) on October 6 2009, 1:45am
Reply on October 6 2009, 3:51pm:
C++ for all of the above.

However, with great power, comes great responsibility, and C++ will definitely force you to be careful with how you use it...
