I like a lot of things about Windows. The Win32 API has a lot to like, especially on x64. Really what it comes down to, though, is that it doesn't get in my way, unlike pretty much any other OS. Some might say the easiest are toolkits like Qt, which is probably preferable if you want to build things fast, and don't mind having a biggish runtime etc. The alternative (in my mind) is to program plain-win32, which, as a newbie, may be hellish.
