Question:
How/why did you cut your programming teeth on BSD? Did your brother push you in that direction?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 19 2013, 7:55pm
Reply on January 20 2013, 2:17pm:
Hmm I did more stuff on SunOS in college and Linux (which my brother introduced me to in the 0.99.x days) than BSD, though we did end up running FreeBSD for web servers back in the day, so I did get to do some stuff for that (SHOUTcast, etc)..

Question:
Will there ever be any more features added to ReaSynth? I like the sound, but there isent much you can do with it.
Asked by will (96.238.63.x) on January 19 2013, 10:06am
Reply on January 19 2013, 3:21pm:
Maybe, but it's supposed to be a pretty basic synth. You can always do fun things to its output.

Reply on January 19 2013, 3:20pm:
I read an interesting article about it on a psychology website, which seemed to be a pretty good assessment of it.

Asked by gio (94.66.33.x) on January 19 2013, 1:29am
Reply on January 19 2013, 3:20pm:
Yeah, const-nazi-ism is probably the best form of nazi-ism.

Question:
Is REAPER getting bastardized by relying on various 3rd party software VLC/FFMPEG/LAME for functionality? I ask as a friend. :)
Asked by gio (94.66.33.x) on January 18 2013, 9:31pm
Reply on January 19 2013, 1:10am:
Nah... it will be nice when mp3 goes patent-free though.

Yeah some good stuff in there... I'm gradually getting myself to use const in more places...

Question:
What are your go to VSTs? Aside from ReaPlugs, any ones that you quite like, are impressed with, drum VSTis?
Asked by Mick (27.127.192.x) on January 17 2013, 11:20pm
Reply on January 19 2013, 1:11am:
Hmm I'm usually too lazy to install anything on my various computers, but when I do sequenced drums I usually end up using BFD 1.x...

Question:
Which do you prefer for non-programming, general use: OSX or Windows7, and why?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 17 2013, 9:04pm
Reply on January 17 2013, 9:46pm:
Windows 7, because a) you can use the mouse less, and b) generally more things run on it (games, etc). OSX is nice because you have bash/perl/php/etc, but then again you can just install msysgit and so on... I do have to say, the battery life of a recent MBP or MBA running OSX is hard to beat on Windows. Sadly...

Question:
I recall years ago you said writing the Javascript for an old nullsoft.com was a bitch to code. Have you brushed up on JS? :)
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 14 2013, 8:48pm
Reply on January 14 2013, 11:22pm:
Hmm I don't remember what that would've been, but yeah I've done more and generally enjoyed it. Done a fair bit of AJAX stuff, too, for things like reaper_www web interface. Writing a small C++ web server + ajax content to do things is pretty fun, actually.

I have it on a box, but I don't use it every day. Not terribly impressed, at least on a PC. Haven't used a Surface yet though.

Question:
What's the most complicated algorithm you've ever solved, one that perhaps took days of just thinking and trying ...
Asked by Will (70.173.150.x) on January 9 2013, 4:34am
Reply on January 10 2013, 2:32am:
Hmm the more difficult things are of higher complexity, generally -- i.e. figuring out the combination of many algorithms needed in order to make something work, and getting them all to play together. Usually once you do that and have things work, then you can refactor any given part in order to improve efficiency etc.. Sorry for the vague answer, but really the timesink is higher level than just "an algorithm."

Question:
On a scale from 0 to 100, how would you rate Reaper today in relation to how you want to get it finally some day?
Asked by Alexander (212.95.7.x) on January 8 2013, 4:46pm
Reply on January 10 2013, 2:29am:
Hard to say, was 0 where it was where it began? It's been about 7 years now, who knows how long it'll go...

Question:
Why is the developement of Reaper so slow lately? Motivation issues? Boredom? Lack of inspiration? My deceived perception?
Asked by InAHurry (89.180.55.x) on January 8 2013, 3:00pm
Reply on January 8 2013, 3:47pm:
It may not be quite as slow as you think, but if it is a bit on the slow side it's probably due to the holidays more than anything.

Question:
How do you convert timesig value in TempoEnvEx to num and den? For example, why is 12910593 equal to 1/197? Thanks!
Asked by Martin (93.136.113.x) on January 6 2013, 7:38pm
Reply on January 6 2013, 9:23pm:
The numerator is the low 16 bits, the denominator is the high 16 bits, so 12910593 is (197<<16)+1.
