Question:
tinyurl.com/amn36wb ::funny and since you love STL you'll like it (hope so). So, is STL that good overall? o_0
Asked by gio (94.66.88.x) on January 30 2013, 6:41pm
Reply on January 30 2013, 8:22pm:
I'm no fan of STL, but that clearly seems to be a case of bad use of STL rather than STL being inherently bad. Having said that, STL does seem very easy to use poorly.

Question:
Ever played with Python or Ruby? Any thoughts?
Asked by Will (70.173.150.x) on January 29 2013, 4:26pm
Reply on January 30 2013, 1:37pm:
I've done a little bit of Python.. I was mostly turned off by how important whitespace ends up being, but that's mostly just me being crotchety and I am not used to it. Anyway, would need some actual project to do in one of these to really dive in.

Meh... it could be done in a much broader, better distributed fashion (like email), and could be interesting. I've been sort of designing a system for that, but am feeling quite lazy.

I'm no expert on it, but there's no shortage of crap litigation around it (Oracle v Google re: Android, etc), also things like

Question:
why do you dislike java so much?
Asked by Will (70.173.150.x) on January 27 2013, 2:48am
Reply on January 27 2013, 2:44pm (edited at January 27 2013, 2:45pm):
I don't have anything against the language, for the most part. The Java runtimes you end up having to install are just awful though, insecure messes. It is also a strangely proprietary platform.
Also, for applications, I really think garbage collection is a bad idea. If you have to periodically scan all memory, you're going to have a bad time. I remember

I don't know -- I have a friend whose skills I respect greatly, and apparently he didn't feel as though he did well in the interview. He works at Google now, though, so I really have no idea. I would think that I would feel like I did poorly, I guess?

How/why did you cut your programming teeth on BSD? Did your brother push you in that direction?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 19 2013, 7:55pm
Reply on January 20 2013, 2:17pm:
Hmm I did more stuff on SunOS in college and Linux (which my brother introduced me to in the 0.99.x days) than BSD, though we did end up running FreeBSD for web servers back in the day, so I did get to do some stuff for that (SHOUTcast, etc)..

Maybe, but it's supposed to be a pretty basic synth. You can always do fun things to its output.

I read an interesting article about it on a psychology website, which seemed to be a pretty good assessment of it.
