Question: Are you working on version 5 of any software you develope? (Pay attention I didnt named the one that can be named, neither I intended to suggest any software in particular that can be used as a DAW for exemple. I just remembered this question because we are ending 2014, and 4-1=3+2=5, of course)

Reply on December 4 2014, 4:42pm (edited at December 4 2014, 4:44pm):
    Full question:
I keep reading that the phil behind R's dev is to add features the devs want to use themselves. I assume this is to keep the job motivating, but I can't help to feel a bit uncomfortable everytime I read that. In practice, R's dev and support is one of the best I've experienced, but again, that statement rubs me the wrong way. Is it unreasonable to expect a bit more influence as a paying customer? Does this mean it is possible that the most requested features never get implemented because the devs don't find them useful?

In an ideal world paying customers (and indeed evaluating users) would get everything they ever desire, but life is full of compromises, and it's also very difficult to implement features well without using them. Our goal is not necessarily to implement everything that everybody wants (an impossibility), but to do some things and do them well.

This brings an important point: I think it's essential when purchasing software to understand that you are purchasing a license for the software as it is today, not necessarily some fantasy of what you want it to be, nor the ability to influence its future.
