Question: Ritual or Blue Bottle?
Asked by Rob Lord (24.5.85.x) on July 27 2009, 7:45pm
Reply on July 27 2009, 8:58pm:
Ritual was good at one point, but lately their coffee tastes strange -- did they get on that ferret-digested track or something? Blue Bottle is good, but I don't like it dripped there, so I'd go Americano. Bird Bath is the best though.

Probably LCD, though I don't have any LCD TVs.. The fans on the plasmas can be sorta loud.

Question: Being an WinAmp devoted user until v 3+2, now I use fb2k. What can you say about it? Isn't winamp a little bit bloated nowadays?
Asked by countach (80.37.78.x) on July 27 2009, 2:01pm
Reply on July 27 2009, 5:26pm (edited at July 27 2009, 6:54pm):
I'm not sure if Winamp is bloated now.. the 5.0x versions I use aren't terribly so. I think bloat can be a bad thing, but being anti-bloat to the point of losing functionality/usability/sentimental attachment is a waste. Which is what fb2k is to me (i.e. I'd just as soon use a command line player, it would make as much sense to me).

Question: Do you use tab when you write code? I notice from some source code written by you that it appear to be space instead of tab.
Asked by PipSqueak (67.88.171.x) on July 27 2009, 11:49am
Reply on July 27 2009, 5:27pm:
Indentation is a waste of bytes! Just kidding. I use tab size of 2, and have my editor use spaces instead of actual tabs.

Nah, the legitimacy of WASTE's license status is unfortunately in question, so I better avoid it.

Question: How do you become the best programmer in the world?
Asked by gangsta (66.184.73.x) on July 26 2009, 11:38am
Reply on July 26 2009, 7:03pm (edited at July 26 2009, 7:11pm):
Kill off everybody who is a better programmer than you, I presume... The difficulty of this is inversely proportional to how good a programmer you are, so I'd suggest finding a sweet spot. If you are reading this, you are obviously better at programming than me, btw.

Question: In your opinion, which are some great software being produced right now? Where are good examples of innovation in the industry?
Asked by Felipe (67.180.84.x) on July 25 2009, 10:59pm
Reply on July 26 2009, 7:08pm:
The best software is probably the kind that you write once and don't have to keep updating.. So the things you'd like the most aren't currently being produced, but rather simply exist. The softwares in this category that ARE being produced would probably be known (currently) only to their authors...

Question: Which audio API do you think is the best and why ?
Asked by remi (80.82.232.x) on July 25 2009, 1:44am
Reply on July 25 2009, 11:38am:
Umm, "audio API" is pretty vague. I'll assume you mean CoreAudio vs OSS vs ALSA vs JACK vs MME vs DirectSound vs WDMKS vs WASAPI vs ASIO.

I haven't worked with JACK. It may be a pleasure, but I can't say.

I'll go with ASIO. It's pretty straightforward to implement on both the driver and application side, and performs well. The downside is of course that these days it's only really available on Windows, and the license for the SDK is generally incompatible with GPL software.

Question: which OS do you prefer for audio development? and which do you prefer in general?
Asked by matt (67.243.50.x) on July 24 2009, 10:04pm
Reply on July 25 2009, 11:35am:
My general preference for application development is Windows (XP, or Vista, I do appreciate the new searchable start menu), with VC6.

OS X is OK for browsing web / reading email / etc, and I do appreciate that it comes with PHP and Apache by default, but Xcode is a real pain. I also haven't found a good free OS X SVN client. TortoiseSVN on windows is great.

For web page type development, then whatever is fine (vim + command line svn + firefox for the PHP.net manual etc).

Question: what time do you wake up; and after that how many hours do you code?
Asked by gio_ (62.103.65.x) on July 24 2009, 3:11pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:32pm (edited at July 24 2009, 4:49pm):
Today I got up at 7am, that was too early. Coffee with dinner the night before = bad sleep. I like getting up between 8 and 9, though often it's more like 9 and 10 or 10 and 11.

Coding is done in little bursts, of a couple hours each.. Mixed with walks, bike rides, urban hikes, snacks, meals, tea time, etc.

Question: Would Las Vegas be a neat place tolive?
Asked by skinny (63.225.89.x) on July 24 2009, 2:45pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:31pm:
I spent Christmas in a casino there one year, that was a depressing mistake.

If you get away from the casinos, it seems like sprawl.

So final answer: no (but obviously I have no first hand experience).

Question: do you hate AOL?
Asked by Ramon (69.38.169.x) on July 24 2009, 2:00pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:29pm:
    Far from it!

If anything the dynamic between me and them ended up being like that of a rebellious teen and his parents, and now that I've moved out on my own things are good between us.

I have very mild but also fond feelings towards them -- but I completely despise bureaucracy, and would be miserable if I was immersed in it again.

Question: Why do people play World of Warcraft when there is World at War?
Asked by L1quid (208.64.186.x) on July 24 2009, 12:38pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:30pm:
Got me, since I've never played World of Warcraft. What's great about World at War (Nacht Der Untoten) is that you can't really play it for more than 90 minutes at a time. People who play World of Warcraft seem to be extremely addicted.

Question: Where should a small online business incorporate?
Asked by L1quid (208.64.186.x) on July 24 2009, 12:20pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 12:24pm:
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer or accountant nor am I qualified to answer this question.

Most people would probably say Delaware. There are advantages to companies doing that, especially if they wish to license IP, or if they plan on being party to lawsuits.

I'd say incorporate where you are -- if you incorporate in another state, you'd still have to file with your state of operations, and pay similar fees etc, and you'd just end up with more paperwork/complexity.
