Question: Have you ever smoked weed? Do you know any weed smokers who were capable of writing good code?
Asked by Mommy (76.110.183.x) on June 7 2018, 9:39pm
Reply on June 8 2018, 12:56am:
Yes, but I try not to code while intoxicated. I know one programmer who smoked a ton and also produced great code... don’t think he smokes as much these days, though...

Question: Apple will (deprecate) OpenGL starting from 10.15. What's the direction for LICE, MoltenVK (Vulkan) or Metal? Does that mean an upgraded toolchain too?
Asked by Gio (62.103.216.x) on June 5 2018, 11:11am
Reply on June 6 2018, 4:22pm:
Doesn't really affect us since we use ancient Cocoa drawing APIs still. Though eventually we'll want to deal with it, probably. Procrastination is always a good thing (eventually)...

We both love soup and snow peas, we love the outdoors, and talking and not talking. We could not talk or talk forever and still find things to not talk about. And quoting movies. And riding bicycles, and the great saunter.

Question: Will the WavPack version in REAPER be updated anytime soon? Version 5.1 was released in Jan 2017. What are your thoughts about recording directly to WavPack instead of WAV?
Asked by Michael (47.184.86.x) on June 4 2018, 8:37pm
Reply on June 5 2018, 12:02am (edited at June 5 2018, 12:03am):
Ah perhaps, yeah (though not sure anything in 5.1 would even apply to the reaper plug-in). I record to wavpack rather than .wav a lot of the time! It uses more CPU but usually when recording I have a ton of CPU to spare (even on a very old C2Q).

Question: Hi Justin. Two or more duplicated lines and I will usually make it a function. What are your thoughts on code duplication?
Asked by provoc (118.209.246.x) on June 4 2018, 3:01pm
Reply on June 4 2018, 7:25pm:
I think that's a bit premature, but a dozen lines seems about right. Having said that, I'm very guilty of letting functions get huge.

Question: There are a few people reporting that Reaper's performance takes a hit due to Spectre and Meltdown fixes, which apparently restrict something related to thread-handling. Is this true, and if so, can anything be done about it?

I have zero information to offer!

Question: Which OS has the best audio api in your experience?
Asked by Will (23.125.224.x) on June 2 2018, 12:37pm
Reply on June 2 2018, 2:54pm:
For audio: I'd say something like jack(linux) and ASIO(windows but not a MS API) are tied somewhat, then CoreAudio (macOS), then ALSA, then far behind the native win32 APIs.

For MIDI, jack is simplest, then maybe coreaudio/win32. I haven't implemented ALSA MIDI yet.

Our EULA was written once by a lawyer many years ago, but while we've slightly updated it since then it is rare that it changes.
