Question: Sometimes I come here and click randomly on your music files. I listened to 240919_v-2-Momentary_Critical_Mass and as the drums came in, it seemed, suddenly, that I had better headphones on. Can you describe how you achieved the separation of the instruments, particularly the drums? I'm a newb at mixing, so I appreciate your time. Thanks, me dummy.

    the drums on that track were recorded via 7 microphones:
    • 3 tom mics (which are gated so they only affect things when a tom is played)

    • kick mic and snare mic which are panned center (each is compressed and EQed somewhat strongly)

    • two mics which are about 3' in front of the kit, and about 6' apart. They are (or were, at some point, lol, equidistant from the snare drum).

      Those two front mics usually peak around -8dBFS, are each compressed (separately) using ReaComp at about 20:1, threshold around -20dB, and have a 264Hz hipass on the detector (so that the kick doesn't trigger the compression so much), otherwise default attack/release/knee. Following the dual-mono compression, there is a JSFX Mid/Side decoder, which gives it a pretty enjoyable stereo image.
