Question: Are the js effects that comes with Reaper open source, as in you can edit the code to do what you want and share it free to the forum or community. Is that legal?

They are, each has its own license at the top of them (for the most part at least)

Wow, so that means that all the creators of js effects can't restrict its modification and distribution as long as the one modifying it is also giving it out free?

@Garby Such restrictions depend on the licence that the JS effects creators uses -- they don't have HAVE TO use the same licence as the Cuckos team does.

@Garby Most of REAPER's JSFX are under the LGPL, so indeed anyone can modify them and distribute them freely -- as long as they keep the initial copyright mention intact. Some of them, however, do not have a licence (autopeakfilter, distort-fuzz, adpcm_simulator, etc. My guess is that it's just an oversight on their part), and can therefore be understood as "proprietary" (= you cannot modify/redistribute them).

Now, effects creators (who started their code from scratch) can choose to use any other open-source licence, in which case they agree to modifications and distribution. For instance, github.com/chkhld/jsfxand github.com/JoepVanlier/JSFXuse MIT.

And other creators can choose to not use a licence at all, or to use non-open source licence (such as CC BY-NC-ND, or anything you want really, see web.archive.org/web/20161125211828..., in which case modifications and distribution are frowned upon, and might be enforceable depending on the country's laws.
