Question: why not limit free use of reaper to one year and lower the license fee to, say, us$30 ?

There's a point where it can be too cheap (and have not sufficient perceived value), or a trial period too long (purchasing a license becomes too optional). 60/60 is working well for us.

the reality is that it's free to use for life, isn't it?

No, from a legal standpoint, everything you create after 60 days will have a legal flaw. Probably no one will enforce this, which is why there is such a belief, as Reaper likely has a regular influx of paying users and doesn't need to waste time on people who abuse the terms.

Compared to other DAWs, the price of Reaper is attractive (I've seen many plugins that cost more), especially considering the capabilities it offers (including frequent updates and taking user needs into account, which is not typical in the industry), and even then, the full license of Reaper is still appealing. You can always use Ardour if financial issues are a concern.
