Question:
Do you prefer developing on the Mac or Windows more (API aside). Why TF do Macs cost so much more?
Asked by Will (70.173.150.x) on May 22 2012, 7:04am
Reply on May 22 2012, 2:43pm:
Windows -- there are nice things about having a native bash shell, but msysgit's is getting pretty good, and Xcode is so awful that it drives me to just use vim on OSX (which is fine, I like vim and all, but that's saying more about Xcode than anything else). Whereas VC6 is fine and usable, as is VC2005...

Question:
How did you connect custom hardware knobs & switches to a Windows machine (Jesusonic) and write software that recognized them?
Asked by Phillip (24.248.82.x) on May 20 2012, 12:15am
Reply on May 20 2012, 10:03pm:
I programmed an AVR microcontroller to sample the knobs/switches, and send that via RS-232 (via a separate chip that handled the RS-232 voltage requirements) to the PC.

Question:
I note the reaper logo would lend itself well to a drinks coaster. Any merch plans?

Reply on May 20 2012, 10:03pm:
Haha not really, but REAPER guitar picks would be even better, IMO.

Question:
What made you choose a 2-space ident? Any interesting story about this? Usually people use 4.
Asked by Rodrigo (201.86.67.x) on May 19 2012, 1:59pm
Reply on May 20 2012, 10:04pm:
It dates back to wanting to cram code onto an 80 column screen, and not wanting to keep functions light. I sort of regret this, as I do often find it difficult to see what lines up with what. Oops.

Question:
Would you be as good if you learned programming at your current age, or is it a young man's game to learn it as well as you did?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on May 18 2012, 10:49pm
Reply on May 20 2012, 10:05pm:
I have no way of knowing, really, but I would tend to think that when you start doesn't matter,(i.e. if I was 50 and had programmed for the same amount of time as I have now, I'd be a similarly competent programmer).

Question:
It's still not fair to neglect those users in such way, methinks. If OLGA were freeware, then I'd understand. But it is not.

Reply on May 20 2012, 10:06pm:
Yeah, I think this will likely be addressed soon.

Why someone use EEL instead of Lua? A chance to defend your baby.
Asked by gio (94.66.81.x) on May 16 2012, 5:06pm

Performance for signal processing... I don't think Lua would come close (which isn't to say Lua isn't awesome, just different design goals).

Soundjam was for macs, Winamp was not. Winamp was owned by AOL by that point, too, I think. Never met the man...

Assuming most of your income doesn't come from Reaper, why wouldn't you make it opensource/free?
Asked by Аркадий (188.120.236.x) on May 13 2012, 1:36am
Reply on May 14 2012, 1:44pm:
Having REAPER be developed by a business has many advantages -- we can have employees, we can spend money to license other technologies, provide infrastructure, etc. In many ways, you get what you pay for.
