Should you avoid memory allocation functions in inner loops? Yes. Do we, the seasoned programmers, do this naturally? Most of the time. When we don't, it usually sticks out like a sore thumb. For me, at least, most of the base classes in WDL are designed to use and reuse memory for the scope of their existence. Often they are member variables of some class (such as a track) which persists, etc. There are no custom allocation systems to build, just sensible use and reuse of existing buffers. Comment...
