Question: Ever use Python for anything? Any thoughts good/bad?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on October 12 2012, 2:12am
Reply on October 15 2012, 2:05am:
Rarely, but I hate whitespace being meaningful. Seems like a decent enough language, though, but I have a hard enough time remembering all of the different syntaxes/keywords between C/C++ and Perl and shell scripts etc.

Question: Who got the best of the O'reilly Stewart Rumble?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on October 11 2012, 11:38pm
Reply on October 15 2012, 2:07am:
I didn't watch it all, but I feel like Stewart dropped the ball a bit, like when he was a touch confused saying that we didn't have a national debt when GW Bush took office (we had projected surpluses but still a significant multi-trillion dollar debt, etc).

Question: Recommended reading for someone trying to improve their OOP skills? Always struggle with coming up with non-obvious classes...
Asked by AdamWathan (142.156.1.x) on October 11 2012, 7:45pm
Reply on October 15 2012, 2:08am:
IMO OOP is best used for the obvious cases; if you can't obviously make something into class/object form, then maybe it shouldn't be that form? Don't have much reading suggestions, though, I'm afraid.

Question: Sorry if I'm violating the R note. bit.ly/URSBgF I wouldn't like to include it in SWS if it's not only a drawing issue.
Asked by Martin (93.136.17.x) on October 10 2012, 10:09pm
Reply on October 15 2012, 2:08am:
You could test that pretty easily (render output before/after, etc)

Question: Do you think ganja should be legalized? If so, where do you draw the line on other drugs?
Asked by Bharath (117.192.139.x) on October 9 2012, 9:00pm
Reply on October 9 2012, 10:43pm:
Yeah, I do think it should. The others are probably best left illegal, though, but IMO possession of any substance for personal use should not be criminal.

Question: What are your thoughts on getting older? Do you feel you achieved as much between 20 and now as you did between 17 and 20?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on October 9 2012, 6:32pm
Reply on October 9 2012, 10:42pm:
I don't really have a problem with it, as long as I can still do things I like to do; and it seems that the more you focus on those things, the longer you can maintain them.

As far as achieving things, I'd say I've achieved a lot more since I was 20 than before, without any doubt, unless you defined things purely on a how-much-play*-money-stock-you-are-handed scale...

Question: Do you stick to lower level programming languages because of personal taste, performance concerns, or both?
Asked by Nick (66.162.131.x) on October 3 2012, 10:23pm
Reply on October 7 2012, 11:15pm:
Probably more of the first, but for any latency-sensitive applications (such as realtime audio processing) anything garbage collected would be a very bad idea.

Question: How do you deal in R* development with time/outcome? How do you decide when/if a feature is worth doing?
Asked by Mabian (81.174.13.x) on October 1 2012, 2:39pm
Reply on October 1 2012, 10:42pm:
For me it is mostly a function of what is worth doing for me as a user... i.e. if you made a graph with the X axis representing little work to lots of work, and the Y axis representing how useful I personally would find it and how often I'd use it, I'd be more likely to do it the farther left/top it is...

Question: Is it a big complication to use skinned scrollbars instead of generic Win ones, programming-wise? Hope R gets them everywhere...
Asked by Tippy (88.207.46.x) on September 29 2012, 9:00pm
Reply on October 1 2012, 10:43pm:
For Windows, there are a few bugs in the skinned scrollbars that make it less than ideal to use everywhere, but I guess we should fix those someday... For OSX, it would require quite a bit more work.

Question: Have you ever started thinking of a "killer app" for mobile devices like you did for the PC in the 90s?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on September 28 2012, 8:57pm
Reply on September 29 2012, 2:48pm:
I have a plan for something on top of which some killer apps could possibly be made, but I'm not quite ready yet to start making it (still in the planning/procrastinating phase).

Question: is it sane to compile commercial programs with gcc, i mean do the code become LGPL automatically by linking to their libraries?
Asked by gio (94.66.51.x) on September 28 2012, 7:04pm
Reply on September 29 2012, 2:47pm:
It is fine -- there are some libraries which your code must be GPL if you link with them and distribute your binary, but I don't think that's the default.

Question: Did having money change you in any negative ways you regretted? Did it create a lasting happiness from where you were before?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on September 24 2012, 11:44pm
Reply on September 25 2012, 2:50am:
I don't think money has had much of an effect on me, one way or the other. Other than allowing me to pursue various things that would've been otherwise more difficult, that is...

Asked by John (70.173.150.x) on September 18 2012, 4:39am
Reply on September 18 2012, 12:12pm:
I do like most of his albums, though they may lack a certain something that some other bands I like have... maybe it's just sincerity. Anyway, Midnight Vultures is probably my favorite.
