Question:
why do you dislike java so much?

Reply on January 27 2013, 2:44pm (edited at January 27 2013, 2:45pm):
I don't have anything against the language, for the most part. The Java runtimes you end up having to install are just awful though, insecure messes. It is also a strangely proprietary platform.
Also, for applications, I really think garbage collection is a bad idea. If you have to periodically scan all memory, you're going to have a bad time. I remember

Ummm.. I may come back to edit this if something funny happens... One time we tried to climb some rocks in Schwa's backyard, but it was too hot so instead we had some gin and tonics.

Do you think you'd do well in a google technical interview?
Asked by Will (70.173.150.x) on January 21 2013, 7:12am
Reply on January 21 2013, 7:19pm:
I don't know -- I have a friend whose skills I respect greatly, and apparently he didn't feel as though he did well in the interview. He works at Google now, though, so I really have no idea. I would think that I would feel like I did poorly, I guess?

I haven't, someone probably has though.. but a lot of it ends up being self explanatory, aside from the EEL programming anyway.

Question:
How/why did you cut your programming teeth on BSD? Did your brother push you in that direction?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 19 2013, 7:55pm
Reply on January 20 2013, 2:17pm:
Hmm I did more stuff on SunOS in college and Linux (which my brother introduced me to in the 0.99.x days) than BSD, though we did end up running FreeBSD for web servers back in the day, so I did get to do some stuff for that (SHOUTcast, etc)..

Question:
Will there ever be any more features added to ReaSynth? I like the sound, but there isent much you can do with it.
Asked by will (96.238.63.x) on January 19 2013, 10:06am
Reply on January 19 2013, 3:21pm:
Maybe, but it's supposed to be a pretty basic synth. You can always do fun things to its output.

I read an interesting article about it on a psychology website, which seemed to be a pretty good assessment of it.

Asked by Mick (27.127.192.x) on January 17 2013, 11:20pm

Question:
Which do you prefer for non-programming, general use: OSX or Windows7, and why?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 17 2013, 9:04pm
Reply on January 17 2013, 9:46pm:
Windows 7, because a) you can use the mouse less, and b) generally more things run on it (games, etc). OSX is nice because you have bash/perl/php/etc, but then again you can just install msysgit and so on... I do have to say, the battery life of a recent MBP or MBA running OSX is hard to beat on Windows. Sadly...

I recall years ago you said writing the Javascript for an old nullsoft.com was a bitch to code. Have you brushed up on JS? :)
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on January 14 2013, 8:48pm
Reply on January 14 2013, 11:22pm:
Hmm I don't remember what that would've been, but yeah I've done more and generally enjoyed it. Done a fair bit of AJAX stuff, too, for things like reaper_www web interface. Writing a small C++ web server + ajax content to do things is pretty fun, actually.
