Question:
Are Open Source softwares as capable as commercial paid softwares? We can do the same thing in both softwares? If yes, then why people use & prefer, for example, Photoshop, rather than using GIMP?
Asked by Abhi (117.197.3.x) on August 29 2018, 6:28am
Reply on August 30 2018, 8:55pm:
People will still pay for Photoshop for example, because it behaves like Photoshop rather than Gimp, even if Gimp can technically do everything that they use PS for (which isn't to say that it can do everything PS can -- I have no idea whether that's true, I'd imagine that PS and Gimps feature sets overlap highly but not completely).

Reply on August 30 2018, 8:53pm:
Sure, it can be good. Still takes a lot of work to do well IMO.

Which is better - thursday and sunday off or saturday and sunday off? (For example, running or taking singing lessons, one should need proper rest)

I think unstructured is better, go with how things feel rather than a schedule.

Do you prefer sleep just at night (like of 8 hours from 11 PM to 7 AM) or you prefer 7 hours sleep at night and 1 hour sleep afternoon, around 2-3 PM?

Reply on August 27 2018, 11:48am:
I usually do the former or so, but I prefer 8-9 hours at night + 1 hour in the afternoon, as rarely as it happens...

What is your current political/ideological position?
Asked by Eliezer (179.219.128.x) on August 26 2018, 3:33am
Reply on August 26 2018, 9:53am:
I'm in favor of medicare for all or single payer healthcare, progressive taxation, strong social services and safety net, environmental regulations, consumer protections, free speech, gun control (licensing process and background checks for guns, assault weapons ban), decriminalization of drugs, criminal justice reform, women's right to choose (within reason), etc. I'm also realistic about expectations of how to get there...

Question:
What do you think about this chart? www.admiralbumblebee.com/DAW-Chart.html It seems like Reaper had the highest total score :P
Asked by MS from Sweden (77.218.247.x) on August 25 2018, 2:47am
Reply on August 25 2018, 10:59pm:
Hah there are a million things that are important to me that aren't on the chart... but nice!

Question:
(Maybe, inappropriate question. Sorry, if it is!) Isn't it possible in REAPER (or in any DAW) to implement a tool which can create per note automation for velocity and pan? I mean, just like we have automation for a track, can't it be implemented in each MIDI note?
Asked by Musical Max (107.170.166.x) on August 24 2018, 2:08pm
Reply on August 24 2018, 5:07pm:
MIDI doesn't define that exactly, is the problem, there are probably nonstandard extensions but not sure if anybody has formalized that...

Question:
In www.reaper.fm, why 'DOWNLOAD REAPER' is always green? Whereas others are white, and they change to green only when highlighted? Also, one more question - why reaper.fm? why not reaper.com? (Sorry, I don't know much about website domains and all). (And .com is most popular, I guess, that's why, I asked)
Asked by Abhi (59.97.204.x) on August 24 2018, 5:07am
Reply on August 24 2018, 5:07pm:
To draw attention towards it.

Following Lokasenna, in Greek the semicolon is the actual question mark, which makes things a little bit questionable... --- fixup_negative_timestamps = true;

In what year, if ever, do you think we'll see the last semicolon used to end a line of code?;

I imagine there will be C/C++ codebases still in use for the remainder of our civilization, until the great EMP?

Question:
I had once start updating my laptop's bios without any intention. The installer came with my drivers. I didn't know what's that. Immediately my laptop restart and a black screen occurs with something written on it. I forced turned off my laptop. Then, when I turned on my laptop, nothing works, just a blank screen. It wasn't booting to Windows. I took it into ... I took it into service center and they replaced the motherboard (it was in warranty, fortunately). What mistake I did? How just a bios update and restart can damage my laptop's motherboard??? Anyway, I deleted that file, even knowing that file was with my laptop's drivers.
Asked by Abhi (59.92.92.x) on August 21 2018, 6:57am
Reply on August 21 2018, 12:58pm:
Probably it was turning the thing off while it was trying to update the BIOS which left the BIOS in a corrupted state...

Question:
Why do we use sharps & flats in music? Why can't we name the 12 notes as A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L? Why bothering key signatures and circle of fifths and enharmonic notes and thinking whether we use sharp or flat (in case if one encounters double sharps and double flats, which are not used practically).
Asked by Zan Himmer (104.131.66.x) on August 21 2018, 5:32am
Reply on August 21 2018, 1:02pm:
I imagine that originally people who notated music would just make music in a single key (where it was A-G and no accidentals), then eventually they expanded out? Edit: I did some googling and found that for a long time only B was made flat at times, hence the shape of the flat symbol being similar to that of a B -- or in german notation, H (similar in shape to a B) is B natural, B is B flat

Asked by Will (23.125.224.x) on August 18 2018, 11:03pm
Reply on August 20 2018, 1:44am:
NYC wins easily! I do sometimes miss the nature elements of Sedona though. The only things I miss about the bay area are the friends who remain there. Also maybe the lack of winter.
