Asked by Will (73.137.176.x) on November 13 2024, 6:48pm
Reply on November 13 2024, 9:09pm:
It depends, but in general more than the CPU cores you have.

Question:
In REAPER, does the same thread that plays audio also update the meters, or are they two different threads?
Asked by Will (73.137.176.x) on November 12 2024, 7:55pm
Reply on November 12 2024, 10:01pm (edited at November 12 2024, 10:02pm):
All UI in REAPER happens from a single thread. The meter state is updated from an audio thread, though things like decay/held peaks/etc are from the UI thread.

Question:
Hi Justin, + Crossfade editor: Add graphical crossfade editor. This function sounds great. Could you please tell me how I should use this function with a screen reader like NVDA? I can't find it. Also, could you explain how to use the newly added "playback support for rendered files" function? How can I control it with the keyboard? So far, I've found that I can use the space bar to play and stop. Are there any other controls, like fast forward, rewind, pause...? There's one more thing I don't understand
Asked by nicotomia (27.219.146.x) on November 12 2024, 3:12pm
Reply on November 12 2024, 10:03pm (edited at November 12 2024, 10:04pm):
This is all stuff that should be discussed in the pre-release forum, not here. But since I'm replying: Not sure how the crossfade editor will translate to screen reader use. As far as playing back via the render window, W/Home also go to the start, R toggles repeat. end of discussion though, please!

Question:
What's the lowest and highest gcc version used for SWELL? I have used it up to 11 with no issues but 12 is a different story. Not in a hurry to move to a newer version but it would be nice to know which versions are being used during development. Thanks
Asked by Gio (79.130.163.x) on November 12 2024, 12:37pm
Reply on November 12 2024, 2:38pm (edited at November 12 2024, 2:39pm):
Pretty sure it should compile with 12 and 13, perhaps using make ALLOW_WARNINGS=1 to ignore any warnings. (probably should make ALLOW_WARNINGS=1 the default)

Question:
Sometimes I come here and click randomly on your music files. I listened to 240919_v-2-Momentary_Critical_Mass and as the drums came in, it seemed, suddenly, that I had better headphones on. Can you describe how you achieved the separation of the instruments, particularly the drums? I'm a newb at mixing, so I appreciate your time. Thanks, me dummy.
Asked by me dummy (98.97.22.x) on November 8 2024, 11:13pm
Reply on November 9 2024, 12:59am (edited at November 9 2024, 1:01am):
the drums on that track were recorded via 7 microphones:
3 tom mics (which are gated so they only affect things when a tom is played)
kick mic and snare mic which are panned center (each is compressed and EQed somewhat strongly)
two mics which are about 3' in front of the kit, and about 6' apart. They are (or were, at some point, lol, equidistant from the snare drum).
Those two front mics usually peak around -8dBFS, are each compressed (separately) using ReaComp at about 20:1, threshold around -20dB, and have a 264Hz hipass on the detector (so that the kick doesn't trigger the compression so much), otherwise default attack/release/knee. Following the dual-mono compression, there is a JSFX Mid/Side decoder, which gives it a pretty enjoyable stereo image.

Question:
Hi, please why did you call it "Jesusonic"? I learnt you are not religious but that name sounds religious. Also, do you hate religious beliefs?

Reply on November 8 2024, 4:46pm:
I'm not religious but Jesus had it right. Love, forgiveness, etc. Good stuff.

Hi Justin, If you were to define the requirements for a digital console, would it be a hardware version based on reaper or a whole new design?

Reply on November 7 2024, 10:11pm:
Haven't thought much about the requirements for a digital console, shrug

you said that the jsfx source would be lgpl'd eventually. did this ever happen? if not, can we still expect it to happen eventually?

Still planning to, keep finding stuff in it that is just too ugly, and there are some already-open-source alternatives that are pretty cool anyway. so not in a big hurry.

Question:
Do you have any plans to add something similar to the Matrix View that is in Sonar? It is a very useful compositional tool and I'm sure you could make it even more functional than the Sonar version.

Would have to take a look at that, which I might do at some point, but not sure.

Question:
What's one Reaper feature you personally want, but haven't gotten around to tackling yet for whatever reason, and why not?
Asked by Chris (173.70.123.x) on November 4 2024, 6:46pm
Reply on November 4 2024, 7:58pm:
Pre-receive sends (meaning track media and record input would get sent, but received from other tracks and child tracks would not). Would allow doing tidy routing of multiple midi tracks to a sampler and have their outputs process on the same track as the midi. Haven’t done it yet because it will require a bunch of tricky changes to not break multiprocessing.
also: having track FX process while prebuffering playback start. Huge tricky can of worms that will require fixing dozens of corner cases/code psths.
