Question:
Why do you use GDI for WDL instead of DirectX or OpenGL? Any plans to do so in the future?
Asked by person4445 (98.191.207.x) on August 22 2010, 3:29pm
Reply on August 22 2010, 8:20pm:
Well we render things ourselves using LICE, typically, but then just use the GDI's BitBlt() to get it to screen. On Win32 at least it's about as compatible and fast as anything else, afaik...

Question:
How can a become so good in programming like you?
Asked by Taquito (96.23.1.x) on August 21 2010, 10:51am
Reply on August 22 2010, 8:22pm (edited at August 22 2010, 8:23pm):
I think practicing by making stuff, and picking moderately challenging things to do both help you learn and be more capable. Also, occasionally working on other people's code, and learning to work within their systems in styles is quite helpful. It's all about being able to adapt.

Question:
Do you agree? harmful.cat-v.org/software/c++/linus
Asked by Will (24.234.128.x) on August 20 2010, 3:14pm
Reply on August 20 2010, 5:49pm (edited at August 20 2010, 6:29pm):
I agree, largely. C++, as used by many, is indeed a horrible language. Programmers who would whine about a project being C instead of C++ are programmers who I wouldn't want to work with. I avoid STL and Boost like the plague. Looking through the Git source code, I'd be happy to hack on it, being C.

Question:
www.wincent.com/a/about/wincent/weblog/archives/2007/07/a_look_b... agree or disagree with Braham's comments?
Asked by Will (24.234.128.x) on August 18 2010, 10:15am
Reply on August 18 2010, 2:05pm:
I don't really see the coherency of Bram's statements, based on that post. Also, while Linus deserves a great deal of credit, a lot of the design elements of Git do come from Bitkeeper, so they should get some credit too...

Question:
Have you consider using GitHub or Google Project Hosting for hosting the opensource stuff you guys have at Cockos?
Asked by Ramon (208.120.239.x) on August 17 2010, 9:37pm
Reply on August 18 2010, 2:06pm:
I think we're probably going to just host our own public repositories for our open source software, and then let other people post their repositories (or patches if they prefer), and we'll pull things we like from them.

Little stuff, yeah (there's a WDL jetpack game I made for my nephew at one point). The modern gaming industry as a whole would be a nightmare to be a part of.

Question:
which revision control tool do you recommend?
Asked by dude (94.54.78.x) on August 14 2010, 1:59am
Reply on August 16 2010, 11:35am (edited at August 16 2010, 2:40pm):
git. Up until a week ago I would have said SVN, but I've converted. The tools for SVN are more mature on Windows, and SVN is a lot simpler to understand, but the sheer power and speed of git is fantastic. So much so that I haven't really gotten any work done lately, I've instead been playing with various branch/merge/rebase scenarios, going "wow" a lot...

I'd have to get a bachelor's degree first... so maybe I'll hold out for an honorary degree someday.
