Question:
A (viable?) answer for Tim Whitman: The samples are picked directly from the MP3 decoding process. Justin, isn't it?
Asked by Ilyes Gouta (41.230.25.x) on September 19 2009, 8:53am
Reply on September 19 2009, 2:39pm:

Question:
Did you guys use DirectSound to create the spectrum analyzer in Winamp? If not, did you capture samples from the soundcard?
Asked by Tim Whitman (76.124.95.x) on September 18 2009, 2:09pm
Reply on September 19 2009, 2:39pm:
Winamp would have access to the samples.. Originally the spectrum analyzer (and EQ for that matter) actually grabbed information from the frequency domain of the mp3 decoding, so it didn't require doing any sort of FFT etc.
For audio CDs, we'd play them and then sample the audio device for visualization, I think (using waveInOpen() etc)..

Question:
Does VC6 create machine code as optimized as VS2008, for example? Hasn't compiler technology improved?
Asked by Will (24.234.128.x) on September 15 2009, 3:12pm
Reply on September 16 2009, 1:56pm:
No, it doesn't. Probably the biggest gains to be had by using more recent compilers are that they can output SSE(x) code etc. But we use ICC with VC6 for performance sensitive stuff, and it seems to be a very modern compiler.

What is the brand and model of your DSLR?
Asked by Dave (222.90.231.x) on September 7 2009, 8:25pm
Reply on September 8 2009, 5:27pm:
I had a Canon EOS D30, which was awesome, I miss that camera. Then (years ago) I sold it and got a EOS 1D mk I, which I'm less in love with. It's big and heavy. It has a CCD rather than a CMOS sensor. I'm tempted to get a 5D MK II, when the price comes down some more. Mmmm full frame, and mmm HD video recording.

What is your favorite band you have seen live?
Asked by RayDay (67.221.74.x) on September 3 2009, 10:36am
Reply on September 3 2009, 12:02pm:
That's tough.. Probably Radiohead, but I've seen them enough times that it somewhat takes away from how awesome they are. They still win, I think. Other bands I've seen (too) many times and really really enjoyed are Mogwai and Dungen.
I saw Jason Lytle a couple months ago and REALLY liked him (he played a bunch of Grandaddy songs which were especially awesome).. He's playing again in October, psyched to go see him again.
