Originally the spectrum analyzer (and EQ for that matter) actually grabbed information from the frequency domain of the mp3 decoding, so it didn't require doing any sort of FFT etc. For audio CDs, we'd play them and then sample the audio device for visualization, I think (using waveInOpen() etc).. Probably the biggest gains to be had by using more recent compilers are that they can output SSE(x) code etc. But we use ICC with VC6 for performance sensitive stuff, and it seems to be a very modern compiler.
