Question:
which OS do you prefer for audio development? and which do you prefer in general?
Asked by matt (67.243.50.x) on July 24 2009, 10:04pm
Reply on July 25 2009, 11:35am:
My general preference for application development is Windows (XP, or Vista, I do appreciate the new searchable start menu), with VC6.
OS X is OK for browsing web / reading email / etc, and I do appreciate that it comes with PHP and Apache by default, but Xcode is a real pain. I also haven't found a good free OS X SVN client. TortoiseSVN on windows is great.
For web page type development, then whatever is fine (vim + command line svn + firefox for the PHP.net manual etc).

Question:
what time do you wake up; and after that how many hours do you code?
Asked by gio_ (62.103.65.x) on July 24 2009, 3:11pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:32pm (edited at July 24 2009, 4:49pm):
Today I got up at 7am, that was too early. Coffee with dinner the night before = bad sleep. I like getting up between 8 and 9, though often it's more like 9 and 10 or 10 and 11.
Coding is done in little bursts, of a couple hours each.. Mixed with walks, bike rides, urban hikes, snacks, meals, tea time, etc.

Question:
Would Las Vegas be a neat place tolive?
Asked by skinny (63.225.89.x) on July 24 2009, 2:45pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:31pm:
I spent Christmas in a casino there one year, that was a depressing mistake.
If you get away from the casinos, it seems like sprawl.
So final answer: no (but obviously I have no first hand experience).

Question:
do you hate AOL?
Asked by Ramon (69.38.169.x) on July 24 2009, 2:00pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:29pm:
Far from it!
If anything the dynamic between me and them ended up being like that of a rebellious teen and his parents, and now that I've moved out on my own things are good between us.
I have very mild but also fond feelings towards them -- but I completely despise bureaucracy, and would be miserable if I was immersed in it again.

Question:
Why do people play World of Warcraft when there is World at War?
Asked by L1quid (208.64.186.x) on July 24 2009, 12:38pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 4:30pm:
Got me, since I've never played World of Warcraft. What's great about World at War (Nacht Der Untoten) is that you can't really play it for more than 90 minutes at a time. People who play World of Warcraft seem to be extremely addicted.

Question:
Where should a small online business incorporate?
Asked by L1quid (208.64.186.x) on July 24 2009, 12:20pm
Reply on July 24 2009, 12:24pm:

Most people would probably say Delaware. There are advantages to companies doing that, especially if they wish to license IP, or if they plan on being party to lawsuits.
I'd say incorporate where you are -- if you incorporate in another state, you'd still have to file with your state of operations, and pay similar fees etc, and you'd just end up with more paperwork/complexity.

Probably "get me a beer." Or maybe "I think you're a terrific girl, but you have clothes like a fucking dickhead."

Are there any well known dildo manufacturers who are publicly traded? That'd be my best bet.

Question:
Why wasn't Winamp 2's awesome incremental search function (bound to 'j') more noticeable? It was life-changing once discovered.
Asked by torbiak (96.52.153.x) on July 24 2009, 11:10am
Reply on July 24 2009, 12:05pm (edited at July 24 2009, 12:14pm):
That functionality is great, I agree.. I like it pretty much everywhere it is available -- we have it in REAPER, Vista's start menu has it, and Spotlight in OS X... All great. To answer your question: maybe because it was incrementally added? I.e. at first it was just a simple listbox.. then it got better.. then eventually DrO I think extended it via a plug-in. Things that slowly come into being in front of people are often ignored?

I hope so! At the very least, I can have the quality of answers diminish rather than the quantity.
Question:
What is your preferred method of brewing coffee?
Asked by roberttheiii (192.249.47.x) on July 24 2009, 9:52am

When I make it at home, I use a french press. I don't like when people brew it for too long, though. I do like a good americano at some places, too.
Question:
Whats your current audioplayer of choice for a) File based playback ) Library based stuff. ...like fb2k / iTunes win + iTunesKeys
Asked by Alex (194.45.94.x) on July 24 2009, 9:49am

I use Winamp 5.05 for all pure-listening stuff that is in mp3/ogg/etc. For multi-track content I use REAPER of course.
Question:
Cakephp or Zend or CodeIgniter or Symfony?... I just don't know what one to choose
Asked by funvill (99.199.98.x) on July 24 2009, 9:39am
Reply:
I'm just dumb and do apt-get install php php5-cli or whatnot :) Then Tom is nice enough to go speed it up for me later, if it's needed (which usually it isn't since we don't get that much traffic).

Question:
I wanna become as great a programmer as Justin Frankel. Any recommendations?
Asked by Maximilian (75.118.173.x) on July 24 2009, 9:27am
Reply:
I need to work on a better list, but the first recommendation I'd have would be to do it a lot. The hardest part in the beginning is finding things that are simple enough to implement, yet interesting enough to bother. That can be tough, staying motivated.
Question:
Any hints about Cockos' "next big thing"? What can we look for from you in the future?
Asked by Alan (67.53.132.x) on July 24 2009, 9:01am
Reply:
We've got some research projects that are interesting (to us), but are probably not "big things." One is a caching, persistent IRC proxy that may also end up doing protocol translation. It allows you to disconnect and reconnect with whatever IRC client, and have the proxy bring you up to speed on what you missed. Particularly useful when logging in on say, your iPhone for short periods of time.
Question:
Which tech company (apart from Cockos) has really "got it right" in both development strategy and treatment of customers?
Asked by drew (82.204.31.x) on July 24 2009, 8:06am
Reply:
Hah, well Cockos could do a bit better...
I think doing both of those things is pretty tough, in any industry. Software may be the easiest due to the write (sort of) once, use infinitely aspect, once you have enough users. Trying to get a sufficient number of users can complicate things, if not done carefully (for example, spending money on advertising has a lot of problems).
Sometimes, though, people just do great work, and genuinely care about the work they are doing. That's what's awesome. We know a painter who is that way. Anytime we need anything done, he's the man.
Oh, and Taim for falafel. They care. They're awesome.
Question:

Yes of course, that's the point.
