Question: What's your opinion of Wine (the compatibility layer) and Wine-based Vst bridges on Linux? Could them represent a real productive solution to the lack of plugins, at least is some cases? Or does it make sense to use Linux+Wine at all?
Asked by Lurens (93.35.72.x) on February 19 2019, 9:26am
Reply on February 20 2019, 1:49am:
WINE is great, but native is more satisfying.

Question: Are you Satoshi Nakamoto? (Semi-serious question, though more likely he was Hal Finney.) Regardless, do you think about the fact that you DID help inspire Bitcoin? (by inventing peer-to-peer file sharing, which inspired BitTorrent, which inspired the name and part of the mechanism of Bitcoin).

Reply on February 14 2019, 1:46am:
I am definitely not SN. I'm not sure if that chain of causality exists, but to the extent that it does, sorry to the planet!

If you use any libc functions, and you don't want exiting the thread to leak, then yes! (= yes)

Question: 2 questions. First, is Waste still viable? 2nd. Did "Michael Bolton" really say "Cockos" in Office Space? lol. One of my fave movies, and that's the only word in it that made me think "huh?" I knew he mean "jackwad corporate tools" but I thought he said "cock hos. Tho online scripts (made by fans) do say "cockos." Oh, I talked up Reaper in this article: producelikeapro.com/blog/getting-s...
Asked by Michael Dean (98.127.53.x) on February 11 2019, 10:55pm
Reply on February 12 2019, 2:30pm:
I'd imagine WASTE should still work, and if you can successfully exchange keys should be pretty safe to use (90% due to obscurity haha). As for the exact line in Office Space, it could be a number of things I guess.

Availability, and FM makes you think of music...

Question: Thank you. If you ever want to include one of 'em, I could use the BSD license instead of the BipCot NoGov License.... And make a version with less than 5000 tuning files, to make the size much smaller. Anyway, I loooooove Reaper. My last 4 albums are 100% Reaper (moved over from Cubase. yuck). And those albums use my microtonal synths a lot: biptunia.com/?page_id=114 Thank you for your service in everything. I'm a huge fan also of ShoutCast forever. 24/7 BipTunia ShoutCast RadioBip.com

Question: Would you like to include my microtonal VST syynths and sampler s in Reaper? biptunia.com/?page_id=2070

Reply on February 11 2019, 1:13am:
Very cool, but not at the moment. If we ever did we would want them to be LGPL or BSD licensed... :)

Question: What is the bitrate of a single player Ninjam on both inbound and outbound in addition to how much is the sample rate that Ninjam can handle?
Asked by David (108.27.244.x) on February 10 2019, 11:56pm
Reply on February 11 2019, 1:13am:
NINJAM uses OGG Vorbis, by default at q=0.0, though perhaps at q=-.1 if a stereo stream, so that's variable bitrate. From memory it usually ends up being around 80kbps for a mono stream or 100kbps for a stereo but that's very rough and might be wrong. The samplerate should be adaptive to whatever Vorbis can take (192khz I think).

Question: I think I finally did it - I think I finally nailed my REAPER configuration. Justin - I have to thank you and congratulate you - you and your friends truly created a masterpiece. And as is the case with every masterpiece - one has to understand mastery before seeing the mastery. Nobody knows the future, but I think REAPER is here to stay for a very, very long time. I can only wish you the best in search for the music of your soul - because in the end, this is really the goal for us all. Thank you and long live the music!

Question: Is there a way you could explain WDL_Typedbuf member functions a little, or even the ones you would consider most useful for a custom multichanel double** buffer (meter values, audio data history)
Asked by Hannes (87.153.188.x) on February 7 2019, 3:20am
Reply on February 10 2019, 2:41am (edited at February 10 2019, 2:42am):
Resize() and Get() are really all there is to it. For multidimensional it's probably easiest to use WDL_TypedBuf for a flat array and implement the other dimensions yourself.

Question: When you opted for ICC for all platforms was it for performance or reliability reasons? If you don't mind to talk about ICC benefits from your experience would be appreciated since I always perceived it like the black sheep but these days something tells me to reevaluate my thinking about CPU dispatch. Thanks.
Asked by Gio (94.70.15.x) on February 5 2019, 12:15pm
Reply on February 10 2019, 2:39am:
It seems to provide the most balanced performance across various CPUs (and doesn't require SSE2 for win32)...

Question: when hosting a vst effect plugin, should I destroy the plugin window when user close it? Or should I hide it?
Asked by ruchira (123.231.87.x) on February 4 2019, 5:19pm
Reply on February 5 2019, 2:43am:
You could hide it if you want, but effEditClose would probably save some memory/resources.
