Question: Sorry if it is inappropriate to ask here. Why REAPER UI lags so much, especially when working on big project (with lots of tracks)? In other DAWs like Studio One, FL Studio etc., their UIs are very very fast and stable and looks nice working on them because of fluidity. Is there no way to fix UI lags in REAPER and make it smooth like other major DAWs' UI? It looks like their UI works on 60 fps whereas REAPER's UI works on just 15-20 fps, not even 30 fps :(

Question: Hi, a question about dither...so lets say Reaper calculates 64 Bit float internally. If you render a 24 Bit wav file in your final export - is dithering needed or is this automatically applied inside Reaper? Or are things (Bit depth of audio and bit depth of Reaper calculation) not related at all?
Asked by Tobias (195.81.221.x) on December 12 2019, 1:40pm
Reply on December 12 2019, 4:57pm:
Technically you do need a dither when rendering to 24-bit, and you can apply this in the render dialog.

In reality though, given the state of noise in converters, etc, for 24-bit, dither is pretty pointless. Having some noise around -140dB is just never going to be an issue.

In summary: dither is more important as the low end of the dynamic range becomes more audible. For 8-bit audio, dither makes a HUGE difference. For 16 bit, it makes a small difference. For 24 bit, it makes a VERY VERY small difference.

Question: Second daw question: what's the 10 feet high level view of multithreading? I assume roughly when you get called by the call back you have a pool of threads you ask to process a DAG starting from the leaves without dependencies and going up? Let me bluntly know as soon as the questions become annoying and I'll stop :p

Maybe twitter would be better to avoid flooding this thing? or do it in the comments to this question? What is DAG? A good first place to look at threads is on getting data from disk. This can almost always (and should almost always) be done from a worker thread at a lower priority...

Question: When it comes to daw development what percentage of success would be due to coding knowledge and what percentage due to domain knowledge. Assuming those are the only important one bings because it is my question

What do you mean by success? Software development isn't about knowledge IMO, it's more about vision and design and then figuring out how to do things...

Question: Hey Justin! Nice to see what you've done for Reaper 6, it looks great! I'm Juan and I'm the leader of a Latin American Game Audio community. We've got weekly shows live where sometimes we use Reaper to show Sound Design tricks and we also do some other stuff to keep our community active. Recently we've come up with the idea of organizing a Latin American Game Audio Jam remotely. Unity and Audikinetic are interested on this adventure and we wonder if you'd like to join us! Any chance to talk about it?

Question: I want to write a toy daw. I think it might be fun. Mind if I drop a bunch of general questions every once in a while in here? To start off, how does the timing of the audio callbacks work at a high level? At some point the hardware/asio/whatever will ask us for a buffer to fill. Do we do the computing then, or do we want to already have a buffer filled to give to the driver?
Asked by eubn (79.40.196.x) on December 10 2019, 7:59pm
Reply on December 10 2019, 10:07pm:
Right, the audio thread will ask for a buffer periodically. If you _can_ precalculate that buffer, e.g. it is not dependent on any of the inputs (and not on user interaction that need to happen with low latency), then sure, precalculate it. If not, you'll have to do some on-the-fly. And at some level, some stuff can be done ahead of time, others not so much.

Question: How do feel when dolts like me make speculative guesses about how your development process works?

Nothing wrong with speculative guesses, or constructive criticism for that matter. The second-order conversations about it all are the useless and often tiresome part ;)

Question: Very grateful for the massive 'give' that is Reaper. Has run the home studio for our North London band for the last 7 or 8 years. Rehearsing, Recording and Listening has massively improved our live playing! Anything we can offer in return? [ license fee seems slightly inadequate! ].
