Question: if software requires .net in order to install, does this imply it may be more bloated or not run as efficiently as software that doesnt require it ?
Asked by EcBaPr (119.18.1.x) on June 1 2021, 1:03pm
Reply on June 2 2021, 7:15pm:
It's definitely not the most efficient nor least bloated way to make something, but it doesn't necessarily mean much (it's definitely possible to do worse without .net)! There can be lots of factors and specifics to consider

Question: In retrospect what would you have done differently with Winamp? Is there something you never got to do that you wish you have during its development?
Asked by Sengor (159.196.230.x) on May 29 2021, 2:58pm
Reply on May 30 2021, 2:19am:
    Hmm good question.

As far as the program itself goes I was pretty happy with it, and while I could probably judge the code very harshly now, having an extra couple of decades of experience, it definitely did enough things right to be useful.

Relating to the personal and business side of it -- there are a number of relatively minor things, the details which are likely not worth mentioning, that I do sometimes wish I had done differently. When I was 20 I definitely didn't know how much I didn't know. Now I at least know the lower bound...

Question: Do you ever see Reaper being forked/rebuilt in a different direction? Maybe changing things that, for backwards compatibility's sake, are stuck a certain way because of early decisions? Vector graphics & GPU acceleration? Even if it won't happen, do you ever wish you could start the project over with your 15 years of additional wisdom?
Asked by Eric (75.15.159.x) on May 26 2021, 8:19pm
Reply on May 26 2021, 10:21pm:
Forked, no. Improved, yes. It's evolved a _ton_ since 2005.

Question: I'm in love with Reaplay. Thanks for that, Justin. Just wondering, why there isn't a "Repeat Song" option. I know my workaround, but I'd rather prefer having that good old option available.
Asked by Kambrica (191.113.26.x) on May 24 2021, 3:49pm
Reply on May 24 2021, 11:23pm:
That was a later Winamp feature I imagine... ;) and I don't encourage overlistening to single songs... albums on repeat are cool though.

Question: Why is REAPER's MIDI editor a library (rather than being 'baked' in the main code)?
Asked by wasereb4 (79.246.84.x) on May 21 2021, 1:36am
Reply on May 21 2021, 12:56pm:
Legacy decision from making the initial MIDI support a plug-in. Probably a bad decision, but shrug.

Question: Is there a problem with different Items with same FXID in their chunk? Can I ask related to Reaper specifics infos here? Srry if no.
Asked by daniellumertz (200.146.247.x) on May 17 2021, 7:23am
Reply on May 17 2021, 2:03pm:
Email or forum for these questions is probably better -- but in general REAPER won't have an issue with duplicate FXIDs, though it's better to create new ones when duplicating FX, and some other scripts/extensions may rely on them being unique.

Question: I've been trying at least a couple times to contact you, Schwa and Ollie through forum PM and email (support@cockos.com) with zero feedback. Are you having issues or do you simply hate me? :)
Asked by Mabian (95.245.177.x) on May 15 2021, 9:23am
Reply on May 15 2021, 1:11pm:
When emailing it's better to email with the issue itself, rather than "I've tried contacting you via the forums"... but anyway email me at justin@ with the specifics.

Question: How will affect REAPER binaries/plugins/VST a hypothetical C++ ABI break for Win/Linux/macOS (sooner or later it's coming)? In this kind of scenario does REAPER have an advantage for not using the std:: (Standard Template Debt) or will be a major disaster regardless?
