Question: Any thoughts on lemmy / mastodon / fediverse in general? Are you using any of them?

Damn, I wonder how it compares to a modestly-sized auto junkyard (of which there are many thousands and thousands in the US) though.

Question: WDL: Any chance for leading underscore to get removed from include guards in the future? Currently ``only'' lineparse.h behaves nicely with naming conventions. Never had an issue related to that... in fact I like it...
Asked by Gio (94.65.220.x) on June 21 2023, 8:07am
Reply on June 22 2023, 1:50pm:
Ah perhaps... but what's the bother really? (we do have some ifdef _WDL_ in our code that would need to get fixed too)

Question: Thanks for the books suggestions some time ago, especially for Gideon the Ninth and N. K. Jemisin trilogy, loved it. May I ask for more books recommendations from you? :) Have a great day

Hah those were both schwa recommendations to me too… The Martha Wells Murderbot series and the Ann Leckie Imperial Radch series are both great too. And everything by Nick Harkaway, including his alter-ego…

Question: When you go out to run how much do you do? Also you keep a steady run or mix run and walks? (by time or distance whatever you think more)
Asked by heya (177.191.3.x) on June 20 2023, 7:45am
Reply on June 20 2023, 4:06pm:
It completely depends and varies a lot. For running, 3-5 miles is probably the most common… 20-30 miles a week is a rough target. And then a lot of walking and/or bicycling as transportation too.

Question: is there a free way to check the most visited pages (within a website) ranked in popularity from first to last
Asked by Ease (46.166.163.x) on June 19 2023, 11:13pm
Reply on June 20 2023, 12:12am:
I suppose you could build something for a website pretty easily, but if you mean for other websites, I have no idea.

Question: Would you recommend a computer with better single-core or multi-core performance for using Reaper to compose music with many VST instruments on many tracks and long FX chains?
Asked by Core (95.91.214.x) on June 19 2023, 9:44pm
Reply on June 20 2023, 12:13am:
Ideally a 16GHz single core computer would be better than 4 4GHz cores, but alas the former does not exist at the moment. With many tracks many cores can work well, but nothing beats raw processing power in a single core.

Question: If you were gonna manufacture your own branded product (lets say a T-shirt or any apparel) which country would u choose to manufacture it in?
Asked by Emmm (70.34.250.x) on June 19 2023, 8:35pm
Reply on June 20 2023, 12:14am:
This is why I choose to make software! But I would probably try to choose to make it locally so I could be involved with the production and make sure everybody involved is happy.

These days I've been going for walks in the park after breakfast, but a lot happens between waking up and that walk (breakfast, coffee, work, etc).

Question: Do you think the Cultural Commons Collection Society (see: c3s.cc/en could be a feasible alternative to BMI and ASCAP?
Asked by Sunblister (46.91.166.x) on June 19 2023, 10:49am
Reply on June 20 2023, 12:15am:
I haven't really dug into it, the thing I'd like to see happen is people support artists directly more by buying their albums rather than using streaming services...

Question: Hey Justin, hope you're well. There's been a lot of talk about an impending recession over the first half of 23', but the narrative recently has been far less aggressive, what do you think, impending, dodged, stagflation?
Asked by Jack (194.110.115.x) on June 18 2023, 7:48am
Reply on June 20 2023, 12:16am:
There are technical definitions of recession and then the real implications, I dunno, the whole managing of interest rates in order to make the workers suffer "the right amount" feels a bit odd, but apparently necessary? shrug. Does it matter what it's called?

Question: It's you against 20yo Justin Frankel in a coding competition. Who would win?
Asked by Will (23.125.224.x) on June 17 2023, 6:36pm
Reply on June 17 2023, 7:17pm (edited at June 17 2023, 7:21pm):
Depends on a lot of factors I suppose, subject matter, points criteria, etc. If it was on the easier side and the only metric that mattered was a working solution in minimal time, probably young me. There are definitely things I could do faster these days though, so hard to say. Also I have a ton more general knowledge now. e.g. "convert UTF-8 into UTF-16 including surrogate pairs" I would be an order of magnitude faster than 20yo me. (UTF-8 didn't exist as a standard in 1998 but even if it had I probably wouldn't have had experience with it...) Post a problem in the comments and I'll try to make a more specific prediction?

(additional edit: what documentation resources do we have? none? 1998 resources? 2023 resources? 20 year old me in 2023 would've been so blown away any time lead would've been lost in shock).

Question: hey jf- can you explain why we use bipolar metering and waveform measurements over unipolar rectified signals?? or,values that only go from nothing >> to >> something? (an old friend & i always joked "whats half of nothing? = nothing")

You can use rectified peaks in REAPER if you like. Some signals are asymmetrical (my bass amp especially!). Helps you spot things?
