Question:
Thinking about the Quick Fun Puzzle from zeof, how about check the sum of the elements, IMO it would disclosure the information of which element is duplicated. right? (to make it a question)
Asked by Dave (117.38.4.x) on July 12 2023, 2:05am
Reply on July 12 2023, 11:02am:
With only a single duplicate that would work, but it can have any number of duplicates so that's a no go. The solutions seem to be related to the solution to
this puzzle

Question:
Quick Fun Puzzle : Given an array of size n, with elements in the range [1, n-1], it contains only one duplicate element example (1,2,2,2,3) , How would you get this duplicate in constant space ?
Asked by zeof (156.195.98.x) on July 9 2023, 4:12am
Reply on July 9 2023, 12:56pm (edited at July 9 2023, 1:02pm):
I assume I can't sort the list because that wouldn't be constant space? Anyway since you don't care about time, the O(N^2) algorithm of checking each element against every later element would be the most obvious way?
Edit: ah, your example confused me, I assume your example is (1,2,2,3) rather than the extra 2? And I also assume (1,3,2,2) would be another valid example (e.g. the list is not necessarily sorted). Anyway there's probably some ways to reduce the complexity of the above search, but since you didn't specify a desired performance characteristic I wouldn't bother!

Question:
How do you keep being so productive after all these years? I keep seeing new functionality in REAPER constantly and the pace doesn't seem to be slowing down. Do you use a system or otherwise?
Asked by Facu (186.13.38.x) on July 8 2023, 11:13pm
Reply on July 9 2023, 12:57pm:
Maybe it's not really THAT productive? A lot of time has passed! Anyway it's a fun project that I use daily so that makes it easier...

Question:
I'd really like to see vector graphics implemented. However, before we reach that stage (which might be 10 or so years in the future according to how you responded previously), is it possible to have more gradations in the graphics/pictures resolutions? i.e. instead of the current 100%-150%-200% to also have the levels of 125%-175%-and stretch this up to 400%? In this was we can design themes that act like they are vectorial, but are raster.
Asked by /AND/ (89.205.77.x) on July 7 2023, 6:50pm
Reply on July 8 2023, 1:33pm:
a theme can define whatever scales it likes, 125%, 350%, whatever

Question:
hey jf- did you ever really find software piracy or any other type of copyrighting legislastion/indications to be an actual realworld "problem" or issue? > did you feel same in youth, as today..?? ta
Asked by 2023 (86.179.190.x) on July 6 2023, 5:59pm
Reply on July 6 2023, 6:16pm:
IMO most people want to do the right there, so if products are appropriately priced I don't see piracy as being a big problem. Counterfeit sales etc are a bigger issue since people can be mislead etc.
the models created by big dominating businesses suck too. e.g. app stores taking a huge percentage, or music services not fairly distributing royalties... These are systemic problems that are structured against (smaller) copyright holders...

Question:
Reaper seems to be used to analyse Audio recordings from airplane blackboxes:
youtu.be/reCwGRnloLc?t=2059
While this snippet appears to be a reenactment, it could still be used.
Asked by Chris (95.168.144.x) on July 5 2023, 6:07pm
Reply on July 6 2023, 2:10pm:
Who knows what people use it for! Anything... but a reenactment probably says more about the production of the reenactment than actual NTSB investigations... :)

Question:
I was wondering how the UI is rendered in Reaper. I assume its no Qt or GTK ( or am I wrong?) I really like the smoothness, low CPU usage and tweakability. Is it native, inherited from winamp, part of WDL??
Asked by pedra (77.245.45.x) on July 5 2023, 9:44am
Reply on July 6 2023, 2:10pm (edited at July 6 2023, 2:11pm):
Pixels get put together using LICE which is part of WDL... for the various controls there's a lightweight virtual control system we made too. (WDL/wingui/). On Win32 we BitBlt() everything to screen from a DIB, on macOS it draws using Metal typically (speaking of which apparently this is very slow on M2 macs now for some reason grrrrr let me go get one of those)

Question:
hey jf - (hows the wrist ?) + do you find brisk fast walking as effective a good run...or?
Asked by 2023 (86.179.190.x) on July 4 2023, 11:09am
Reply on July 4 2023, 5:45pm:
wrist is good! other parts always broken though. :) "effective" is hard to quantify. It's hard for me to get my HR above about 115 on a fast walk (5mph) unless there's a big hill involved... but at a HR of 115 my body knows it would be faster for the same HR by running (6mph or so). But at any rate, for training purposes you need some higher intensity, which is harder to do by walking...

trackpad or trackpoint?

I can do either but I do prefer the trackpoint. Among trackpads there is a lot of variety, I don't mind the one on the M1 MBA.

WDL: Any chance for leading underscore to get removed from include guards in the future? Currently ``only'' lineparse.h behaves nicely with naming conventions. Never had an issue related to that... in fact I like it...

Question:
When you go out to run how much do you do? Also you keep a steady run or mix run and walks? (by time or distance whatever you think more)
Asked by heya (177.191.3.x) on June 20 2023, 7:45am
Reply on June 20 2023, 4:06pm:
It completely depends and varies a lot. For running, 3-5 miles is probably the most common… 20-30 miles a week is a rough target. And then a lot of walking and/or bicycling as transportation too.
