Question:
What do you think ARM's place will be in Windows/Linux going forward? Do you think it'll replace x86 in the mainstream or do you think it will be supported side by side for the foreseeable future? like
Asked by Aaron (172.56.71.x) on December 26 2024, 4:00pm
Reply on December 28 2024, 1:43am:
Will be interesting to see! I doubt x86_64 is going anywhere but will be good to have both going.

Question:
Hey jf - I don't want to bombard you with countless questions regarding DAWs and how they work under the hood on your site but I do have another question. Data stream management and audio buffers (If those are the correct terms?). But does each track and child track have their own audio buffer and if not, how exactly are each track mixed into a final audio buffer? And also, how exactly does a DAW keep track of each stream within a given session? I am assuming it uses a binary tree, or something else?
Asked by Matthew (98.13.80.x) on December 24 2024, 6:27am
Reply on December 24 2024, 4:05pm:
Each track probably has various buffers, but in general if you want to render an audio block for the project you'd go through all tracks, render each track to wherever, then sum it to the project mix, etc.

Shouldn't that spirit be applied year-round?

Question:
Would you try using Cosense(scrapbox.io) as a forum for Reaper? I use it always and it's super convenient. I can just put words in brackets and have them link to the page for that word. There's no way to put into words how happy I am...
Asked by Vlzs (221.170.41.x) on December 23 2024, 1:25pm
Reply on December 23 2024, 4:44pm:
Moving the forum would require a lot of work and we'd want to make sure we're not hurting the experience of existing users, as well as the valuable resources of all of the existing posts... so before we'd ever switch to another forum software a lot of things would have to be figured out. don't know much about that software but I will read about it.

Hi Justin, I understand if you don't want to answer this as many people are a bit sensitive about the subject ,but are you a religious man?

Question:
Not REAPER request, but REAPER Videos request haha. Can you make a keyboard shortcut for playback speed? I watch videos there in REAPER website but have to click again and again on playback speed thing. Instead maybe add a keyboard shortcut to increase/decrease playback speed like how it is in youtube? Or maybe something like Ctrl+1 for 1.5x speed, Ctrl+2 for 2x speed etc. ?

Job or journalistic? It's been so long since I've interviewed for a job, and probably never had a successful one anyway, I'm a bad source. I'd say be yourself and completely honest, but not overly honest lol.

Question:
I have a 15.6 inch laptop. So, some virtual instruments plugin are bigger in size, bigger than screen of my laptop. But thanks to REAPER, I can scroll those big size plugins and access to those areas of that plugin which are out of my screen. But I can do this only in VST2. I can't do this scroll thing in VST3 and CLAP. Do you know reason why? This made me stick to VST2, instead of switching to VST3 or CLAP.
Asked by Abhi (106.219.71.x) on December 18 2024, 11:54am
Reply on December 18 2024, 5:59pm:
that scrolling support causes a lot of problems, maybe we can add it as an option for VST3s too, let me think about that.

Question:
Hello Justin, I am giving a school presentation on "Managing Complexity in software", I never really worked on anything I would consider complex so I feel like I have nothing interesting to offer, and to me reaper is a perfect example of a really complex software that has alot of options and modules and at the same time must maintain good performance, so If you have time can you briefly outline some of the key guidelines that you follow or anything that comes to your mind could be really helpful, thank you
Asked by ryan (41.43.201.x) on December 17 2024, 10:54am
Reply on December 17 2024, 4:27pm:
Oh boy, software can get so complex. Performance IMO is less of a challenge than stability and reliability. Performance you can take care with rough guidelines, and then when issues come up address them either via optimizing the complexity or the implementation. But stability and reliability -- those are things that the surface you have to analyze is huge, especially with customization, different modes of operation, third party plug-ins, etc. You quickly get to a point where there are millions and millions of different states to be in, and if an issues comes up in some tiny fraction of those states, you have to find it. So a big help is the ability to share state between users and developers. E.g. a user has a bug, a significant percentage of the time we won't be able to reproduce it trivially; we'll take their reaper.ini and a project file, which makes it more likely to be reproduced, etc. I could go on, at length... discuss in the comments if you like.
